Armenian community plays important role in Iran’s life

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 25, ARMENPRESS: The Armenian community of Iran is among the leading communities in preservation of the language and culture. The community regulates the Armenian preservation and mixed marriages issues by domestic mechanisms. The representatives of the Armenian community of Iran informed Armenpress about it.
“The presence of the Armenians in Iran has got a history of centuries. The Teheran Prelacy is nearly 100 year-old, the Isfahan Prelacy – 400 year-old and the Atropatene one has a history of 800 years. Our prelacy has not been formed as a consequence of the Armenian Genocide and is a bit different from the others. The cultural and language-conversational resemblance, which we have with Armenia, makes our work in Armenian preservation issue easier”, - said the Deputy Chair of the Armenian Prelacy Council of Teheran Ara Shakhnazaryan.
According to him, the Armenian community of Iran makes about 55-60,000 people, the major part of which – 45-50,000 – is centralized in Teheran. “Earlier the number of the Armenians was higher. During the last 30 years they have moved from Iran for some reasons mainly to the West”, - he said.
