Defense Minister meets Special Representative of OSCE Chairperson-in-Office for South Caucasus

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 23, ARMENPRESS. Armenia’s Defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan on February 23 held a meeting with Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office for the South Caucasus, Ambassador Günther Bächler, press service of the Ministry told “Armenpress”.

The Defense Minister expressed Armenia’s assistance to the priorities set by the OSCE Austrian chairmanship directed towards the settlement of conflicts, easing tension and restoring an atmosphere of mutual trust.

Presenting the existing situation in the Armenian-Azerbaijani line of contact, Vigen Sargsyan attached importance to the efforts aimed at installing international investigative mechanism for the ceasefire violation cases, as well as emphasized the necessity to condemn Azerbaijan’s violations of all international obligations on arms control by the international community.

Coming to the difficult situation created over the OSCE Yerevan Office, Vigen Sargsyan appreciated the role of the Office and the organization in general in the development of democratic institutions, modernization of the electoral system and improvement of human rights in Armenia. Highlighting that Armenia’s cooperation with the OSCE is based on values and principles, the Defense Minister said Azerbaijan’s initiatives and blackmail policy on suspending the activity of the Office and discrediting the OSCE are impermissible.

In his turn, Ambassador Günther Bächler reaffirmed the necessity to intensify the OSCE efforts aimed at settling the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and easing the tension, as well as to maintain the reputation of the organization, and expressed hope the difficult situation over the OSCE Yerevan Office will be solved in accordance with the interests of the OSCE and Armenia.

The sides also exchanged views on the cooperation mechanisms during Armenia’s upcoming parliamentary election.
