Political scientist: Recognition of NKR independence is possible only in case of war

YEREVAN, MAY 12, ARMENPRESS. Director of the “Caucasus Institute” Alexander Iskandaryan says recognition of NKR independence by Armenia, moreover, NKR’s joining to Armenia will not take place in the upcoming days. It is possible only in case of starting large-scale war.

Iskandaryan says the regional developments are related with the Karabakh events. “There is an opportunity to restart the negotiation process, that's why the NKR recognition will not happen. NKR’s official joining to Armenia will be viewed as an aggression by the international community", he said. Iskandaysan says the international community perceives Nagorno Karabakh as part of Azerbaijani territory over which the OSCE Minsk Group negotiations process is underway.

From the other side, Iskandaryan believes that Azerbaijan is not ready to war, however, it will continue from time to time escalate the situation which will be difficult to prevent. “The aim of April escalation was to take several villages, but not to start a war”, he said.

He says he still considers 1994 ceasefire agreement to remain on the agenda, since except from that and the ideology of Madrid principles, we have nothing: another thing when they do not follow it.
