YEREVAN, APRIL 12, ARMENPRESS. The clashes in Nagorno Karabakh were unexpected for the international community. As “Armenpress” reports, this was stated by analyst of the German Marshall Fund Joshua Walker in an interview with “Voice of America”. “The world is focused on Syria and the Middle East, and when the previously frozen conflict in Nagorno Karabakh re-started, the international community did not know how to respond to it”, the analyst said. According to him, the Nagorno Karabakh conflict is so complex, that the international community does not want to get involved in its settlement process, and whereas regarding the Syrian issue everyone wants to get involved and help the refugees, the Karabakh issue is a problem which remained from the Cold War era.
The analyst said although the Nagorno Karabakh conflict has no military solution, an illusion might be created among the people in the line of contact that it might be settled by military means, however every effort should be made to avoid war, in order to save lives.
According to the representative of Nagorno Karabakh in Washington Robert Avetisyan, the people of Nagorno Karabakh do not want war, but there is no sign that the Azerbaijani people share this attitude. “We hope that after this events, when Azerbaijan realized that they cannot settle this issue by military means, they will be more open and will accept more humbly the proposals made by Armenia as well as the international community”, Avetisyan said.
