ECHR satisfies suit against Azerbaijan

YEREVAN, JULY 16, ARMENPRESS. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) made a judgement to oblige the Azerbaijani authorities to pay 8600 Euros as a penalty based on the complaint of the leader of opposition party “National front” Ali Karimli.

As “Armenpress” reports, citing Azerbaijani media, the complaint was about the fact that the Azerbaijani authorities refused to give Karimli a new passport for years.

The leader of the “National front” had asked for a new passport in order to make a visit to abroad in 2006, but was refused allegedly for a criminal case against him.

That case started in 1994 and closed in 1995 that is why the criminal investigation was a false reasoning. Numerous applications of Karimli to Prosecution and Courts had no results. Ali Karimli applied to ECHR referring to the fact that his right to free movement had been constrained in Azerbaijan.

According to the decision of the ECHR, the Azerbaijani government has to pay Karimli 5000 Euros as compensation, as well as 3600 Euros for forensic expenditures.
