President Sargsyan touched upon regional security issues during interview

YEREVAN, 10 APRIL, ARMENPRESS. Armenia’s accession to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is important for the maintenance of stability in the region. As “Armenpress” reports, this is whatPresident of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyanmentioned as he touched upon regional security issues and Georgia’s aspirations to join NATO in an interview that he gave to the “Together” television series on “Mir” Television.

“Armenia has great relations with Georgia, and it is our duty to respect our neighboring country’s choice. We find that, when acceding to different unions or setting the national priorities, every country must have a basis to make sure that there is no negative impact on the overall situation in the region. Armenia’s basis is that security is inseparable and interchangeable,”President Sargsyan said.

According to the President, there are so many challenges in the 21stcentury that countries are simply incapable of fighting against them alone, and that’s when acceding to unions simply becomes necessary.

According to the President of Armenia, the most important thing now is to make sure that Armenia’s accession to one union and Georgia’s accession to or cooperation with another union doesn’t worsen the situation in our region.“The maintenance of stability in our countries very highly depends on Georgia’s position. I’m certain that there won’t come a time when we will have bad relations with Georgia because of that. I believe the Georgian authorities also view the situation in this way. Armenia hasn’t seen any action of the Georgian authorities that could lead to intensification of the situation,”Serzh Sargsyan emphasized.
