China's Tianhe-2 supercomputer remains world's most powerful

YEREVAN, JUNE 24, ARMENPRESS.China's Tianhe-2 supercomputerhas retained its status as the world's most powerful computer.It is the third time Tianhe-2 has topped the list according to a biannual Top500 list of supercomputers, which was published on June 23, reports “Armenpress”, in reference to Economic Times.
Developed by China's National University of Defence Technology, the supercomputer is a product of China's 863 high technology program, which aims to reduce reliance on foreign technology.Tianhe-2, which means "Milky Way-2" in Chinese, can operate at 33.86 petaflops per second, equivalent to 33,860 trillion calculations per second. The Chinese supercomputer is almost twice as fast as the next on the list, Titan of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), which has a performance of 17.59 Pflop/s.
The Top500 list is considered to be one of the most authoritative rankings of the world's supercomputers. It is compiled on the basis of the machines' performance on the Linpack benchmark by experts from the United States and Germany.
