YEREVAN, MAY 31, ARMENPRESS.An Iranian court has sentenced a British woman and seven others to up to 20 years in jail for crimes including posting comments on Facebook, an opposition website said yesterday.
As "Armenpress" was informed from the Telegraph, Roya Saberi Negad Nobakht was arrested during a visit to Shiraz last autumn for comments she had made on her Facebook page, and was last week sentenced to 20 years in jail, the Kaleme website said.
Kaleme, which did not cite a source for its report, said the sentences were delivered last week.
Ms Nobakht, who was said to be "devastated", has dual British-Iranian nationality and had been living with her husband in Stockport, according to media reports.
"She is not doing well. She is just a housewife and is not an activist. She has said she would rather die than be there for 20 years. She has been tortured and the conditions at the prison are terrible. She is under a lot of pressure. They have taken confession under duress that she has said something against the Iranian republic."
There was no official confirmation of the court ruling and it was not possible to verify the report independently.
Last week, the authorities arrested six young Iranians for dancing to US singer Pharrell Williams' hit "Happy" in a video that went viral. The six were later released on bail.
