Armenia’s Climate Conditions Favorable for Development of Greenhouse Businesses

YEREVAN, JUNE 9, ARMENPRESS:

Armenia's climate conditions are favorable for the development of greenhouse businesses, Poghos Gevorgyan, director of the Greenhouse Association of Armenia, said today at a news conference. He added that the greenhouse business has advanced in Armenia.

In the result of a monitoring, conducted 2003 in association with the Business Support Center, it became clear that 39 ha of greenhouse is available in Armenia and now it increased up to 120 ha. The territory of the greenhouses is the same as it was in the Soviet period.

"However there is an opportunity to develop it. It is not a coincidence that in the Soviet years it was intended to create 1000ha-greenhouse in Armenia. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the programs remained unfinished," Poghos Gevorgyan said.

He says the Greenhouse Association has an objective to develop greenhouse businesses in the mountainous areas and create vacancies there. "The association is not able to implement such programs," Poghos Gevorgyan. He added that Armenia should become a country of greenhouse industry.

According to Samvel Gevorgyan, director of the Business Support Center, since its establishment the center has been engaged in issues and opportunities of the greenhouse business. He said one of the most important issues is the lack of specialists. "For the young generation the profession has no appeal," he said.

Samvel Gevorgyan says the greenhouse business development in Armenia will promote the development of other spheres, creation of vacancies, as well as increase in investments.
