Specialists concerned about fires in Syunik

KAPAN, DECEMBER 9, ARMENPRESS: December 8-11, the Armenian Nature Protection Ministry, with the support of the UN Development Program, conducts a class on the theme of “Preservation of Syunik Wood Biodiversity toward Consequences of Climate Change” for employees of wood economies of the province and specially protected areas of nature. The purpose is the increase of adaptation of wood ecosystems as a result of climate change and implementation of measures directed toward confrontation of disasters.
Director of “Forest Research – Experimental Centre” SNCO Andranik Ghulijanyan said that the consequences of climate change in the territory of Armenia are more notable in Syunik, so the specialists of the Ministry started the class from Syunik province. From the next year they will be conducted in other provinces of the republic.
The negative influences of climate change on wood zones were discussed the first day of the class. It was noted that in the recent years especially fires have caused great harm to Syunik woods. A great number of trees have been cut in Syunik in the years of energy crisis, but today there are cases of illegal tree cutting as well. Wood recovery works have been carried out on 55 hectares area of burned words in the recent years. Referring to Shikahogh State Reserve, Mr. Ghulijanyan said that inventory works and assessment of resources must be conducted here, which is done in foreign countries once in 5 years.
