YEREVAN, AUGSUT 23, ARMENPRESS: Twenty years ago this day the Supreme Council of Armenia adopted a very important document for the history of Armenia – the Independence Declaration, doctor of historical sciences, professor, dean of the History of the Yerevan State University Edik Minasyan said today at a meeting with journalists, adding that it is a program package, which consists of 12 points and political, economic and cultural parts. The historian noted that the 1990 parliamentary elections were the first alternative elections in the history of the Soviet Armenia, as a result of which, besides the Armenian communist party, the representatives of the Armenian National Movement entered into the parliament.
“These events formed the basis, which allowed adopting the Independence Declaration, which had a historical significance for our people,” E. Minasyan said. According to him, essential changes were implemented in the political field, Armenian Soviet Socialistic Republic was renamed Republic of Armenia, and it was announced that Armenia will continue the traditions of the first republic.
The historian underscored that the provisions on separating of especially 3 branches, legislative, executive and judicial, as well as on confirmation of multi-party system and conduction of independent foreign policy were very essential.
A special point was included in the declaration, according to which the Republic of Armenia is committed to pursue the goal of recognition of the Armenian Genocide. “This document is the basis of the whole RA legislation;” E. Minasyan noted.
