Armenian envoy concludes tenure as ECOSOC Vice-President

With the handover of responsibilities to the newly elected Bureau, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN Paruyr Hovhannisyan formally concluded his tenure as Vice-President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Permanent Mission of Armenia to the UN has said.

Reflecting on his year-long tenure, Ambassador Hovhannisyan noted that it had been a demanding, rewarding and genuinely enriching period. In his capacity as Vice-President, he had the privilege of taking responsibility for and chairing the ECOSOC Coordination Segment, chairing numerous meetings of the Council and the High-level Political Forum, and contributing as a panelist and participant to discussions ranging from Financing for Development and investment to food systems, sustainable infrastructure, peacebuilding and the UN80 process.

The ECOSOC Vice-Presidency also offered an important opportunity to bring Armenia’s perspectives more prominently into the UN development agenda - highlighting the particular challenges of landlocked developing and middle-income countries, sustainable connectivity and the importance of mountain ecosystems, while promoting Armenia’s preparations to host COP17 of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan.

In handing over responsibilities to the newly elected Bureau, Ambassador Hovhannisyan underscored the importance of continuity as a key source of strength and effectiveness for multilateral institutions.
