The United Kingdom aims to significantly improve its relations with the European Union, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham told European Council President António Costa.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the two officials met on a train while travelling to Kyiv to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day.
“Britain needs to be bolder in moving closer to the union,” Burnham said, according to the statement.
The UK Prime Minister said this meant building on the close ties already established between the United Kingdom and its European allies in defence and security, using them as a basis for expanding cooperation across all areas of the relationship.
Burnham and Costa agreed that the UK-EU summit, due to take place later this year, would provide a platform for continuing this work.
Later on August 24, Burnham and Costa will attend a summit of the Coalition of the Willing in Kyiv, bringing together countries united in support of Ukraine.
