Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said at a press conference on August 12 that the country was working to bring the United States and Iran “to the negotiating table” and prevent efforts to derail the peace process, Al Jazeera reports.
“Pakistan will continue to neutralise spoilers through direct and indirect channels and enable constructive dialogue to continue in order to resolve all outstanding issues,” he added, without naming any country or actor he considered a “spoiler”.
Andrabi added that Pakistan remained engaged with other Muslim countries in efforts to resolve the crisis in the Middle East and the Gulf.
According to him, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Foreign Minister held talks with officials from Iran, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait on August 10.
Andrabi also said the foreign ministers of Pakistan and Iran had exchanged views on “efforts to promote peace and stability”.
Regarding Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s visit to Iran on August 11, the spokesperson said it provided another opportunity to discuss bilateral relations and regional security.
Andrabi also referred to the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan, describing it as part of Pakistan’s efforts to “strengthen its strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia”.
The spokesperson’s comments come amid ongoing efforts to restore the ceasefire between the United States and Iran and implement a memorandum of understanding aimed at resolving disputes over the Strait of Hormuz.
Pakistan has played a key mediating role in efforts to resolve the US-Iran conflict that began in February.
