At least one person has been killed during an alleged bank robbery in the southern German city of Regensburg, in the federal state of Bavaria, N-tv reported, citing police.
According to the broadcaster, the attacker is believed to be armed with a knife and remains inside the building.
The victim was taken to hospital by ambulance but died of his injuries, police said.
Law enforcement authorities believe there are still people inside the bank, but they are not being held hostage. No attempt has yet been made to storm the building, although a large number of police officers, including special forces, have been deployed to the scene. A helicopter has also been involved in the operation.
The attacker’s motives remain unknown. He has not made any demands so far, a police spokesperson added.
Residents have been urged to avoid the area of the operation and to follow all instructions from law enforcement officers.
