The city of Yerevan plans to designate the Hrazdan Gorge as a special municipal conservation area and formalize a management plan.
Sirarpi Haykazyan, the acting head of the City Hall Department of Environmental Protection, said at a meeting on Monday that the initiative will soon be submitted for City Council debate.
“The draft ordinance has already been prepared by the Environmental Protection Department and will be submitted at the upcoming session. With the implementation of this initiative, and after the adoption of the legislative amendments package, Yerevan will become the first municipality to designate a specially protected natural area. This is also an important commitment within the framework of COP17 to be held in Armenia.”
According to her, like all specially protected areas, the Hrazdan Gorge must also have a management plan. “To that end, a relevant tender has already been announced by the Asian Development Bank,” she added.
