Human Rights Defender (Ombudsperson) of Armenia, Anahit Manasyan, strongly condemned on Tuesday the brawl between councillors at the Yerevan City Council meeting earlier in the day, lambasting those involved for promoting violence.

“Political forces cannot constantly speak about the importance of rights while, through their own behavior, spreading physical violence or other forms of violence, insult, hate speech, and various manifestations of intolerance.

The Human Rights Defender, Anahit Manasyan, considers the incident that took place on June 23 at the Yerevan City Hall to be concerning from a human rights perspective and incompatible with democratic governance and civilized political debate.

Officials holding public office, through such behavior, not only promote violence and intolerance as acceptable patterns of conduct, but also hinder the development of the entire system for the protection and promotion of human rights. All of this is a strongly condemnable occurrence,” Manasyan’s office said in a statement.
