Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said he believes that developments regarding the opening of the land border with Türkiye will happen soon.
He made the remarks at the Polish Institute of International Affairs, a Warsaw-based think tank, during his official visit to Poland, when asked by a member of the audience about the Armenia-Türkiye normalization process.
“We have a very positive dialogue with Türkiye; we constantly hold meetings and consultations. But, of course, the most important event that we hope to see is the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Türkiye and, naturally, the opening of the land border. Why do I specifically mention the land border? Because the air border is already open—we have regular flights from Armenia to Türkiye. My expectation is that the volume of bilateral flights will increase; however, of course, we hope that the land border will also be opened.
By the way, we will need new infrastructure at the border with Türkiye, and we are currently discussing how the EU can support us in this matter. The process is underway, and I am confident that we will see progress very soon,” Pashinyan said.
He added that he has the impression there is a common understanding that the border should be opened, but that it depends on Türkiye's decision.
“From the Armenian side, there are no obstacles—we are ready to do this at any time. In recent months, we have repeatedly stated that we are also prepared to provide a route for trucks traveling from Türkiye to Azerbaijan and from Azerbaijan to Türkiye. The infrastructure is fully ready for this, and we are waiting for Türkiye's decision,” Pashinyan emphasized.
Türkiye unilaterally closed its land border with Armenia in 1993. The two countries have intensified normalization efforts in recent years. Armenia’s border checkpoint with Türkiye has been modernized and is ready for operations.
