Pashinyan lauds EU as Armenia’s most reliable partner in strengthening democracy

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has described the European Union as Armenia’s most reliable partner in strengthening democracy. He made the remarks at the Polish Institute of International Affairs, a Warsaw-based think tank, during his official visit to Poland.

The Prime Minister was asked what specific support Armenia expects from the EU and what the EU can do to ensure lasting peace in the South Caucasus.

“Since 2022, we have received very concrete support from the European Union. As I have already mentioned, the deployment of the EU Monitoring Mission in Armenia has been and remains very important. In recent years, we have cooperated with the EU based on a democratic reform agenda. I believe the EU is Armenia’s most reliable partner in strengthening democracy. Last year, our parliament adopted a law on starting the process of Armenia’s accession to the European Union. This law is a very important incentive for us to continue pursuing the democratic reform agenda,” Pashinyan said.

The Prime Minister added that new opportunities are now emerging in the South Caucasus. “We are discussing how the EU can be involved in opening regional communications. We hope that investments will come from the EU and its member states. We are focusing on finding new opportunities for Armenia to deepen relations with the EU and its member states across various sectors—from the economy to the democratic reform agenda, defense, and more. We are grateful that in recent years, Armenia has participated in the European Peace Facility program, through which we have begun cooperation with the EU in the field of defense,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

He also noted that the protection and development of democracy in Armenia are very important, and that the Armenian government is working with the EU in this regard.
