North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test firing of hypersonic missiles on Sunday, state media KCNA reported.
According to KCNA, Kim Jong Un said “it is a very important strategic task to maintain and expand a powerful and reliable nuclear deterrent.” He said it was necessary due to “the recent geopolitical crisis and complicated international events.”
The missiles hit targets about 1,000 km (621 miles) away, over the sea east of North Korea, KCNA said.
