Armenia expects next UN Secretary General to support efforts to reinforce peace

Armenia expects the 10th Secretary General of the UN to consistently support the efforts to sustain and reinforce peace in the region of South Caucasus anchored on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and International Law, Deputy Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN Zhirayr Ananyan said.

He made the remarks at the UN Security Council Open Debate Leadership for Peace held under the Slovenian presidency on December 15, 2025.

According to a press release by Permanent Mission of Armenia to the UN, Mr. Ananyan “underscored that the unresolved challenges of the past, present threats and future uncertainties remind about the indispensability of multilateralism with the United Nations at its core.”

“At the time of geopolitical turbulence and alarming polarization, the United Nations is more than ever relevant to lead the international endeavors to prevent conflicts, solidify the global peace and security architecture, promote sustainable development and uphold human rights and dignity,” he said. Ananyan added, “The Armenian side expects the 10th Secretary General of the UN to consistently support the efforts to sustain and reinforce peace in the region of South Caucasus anchored on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and International Law, in particular the sovereign equality and territorial integrity of states.”

The term of incumbent UN Secretary-General António Guterres will conclude at the end of 2026.
