Over 26,200 forcibly displaced persons from Karabakh granted Armenian citizenship so far

A total of 26,233 of the more than 100,000 forcibly displaced persons from Karabakh have been granted Armenian citizenship, while another 6,696 applications are still being processed, Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Davit Khachatryan said in parliament.

MP Babken Tunyan of the Civil Contract party, speaking in the context of eligibility for housing support programs, noted that Armenian citizenship is a mandatory requirement and asked the official to provide details. The MP said he had heard rumors that the government was allegedly refraining from granting citizenship to too many people.

“As of today, 26,233 of our displaced compatriots have received citizenship, of whom 16,919 are adults and 8,314 are minors. The number of applicants whose citizenship applications are still being processed is 6,696,” Khachatryan said.

Regarding reports of citizenship being denied, he said that he has no such information and that no complaints of this kind have been received.

More than 100,000 people—the entire population of Karabakh—fled to Armenia during the 2023 Azeri offensive. They were officially recognized as forcibly displaced persons by the Armenian government, which launched various relief programs, including a housing support program. One of the requirements for applying to the housing program is Armenian citizenship.
