Armenian Environment minister meets with EU Commissioner in New York ahead of COP17

Armenian Minister of Environment Hambardzum Matevosyan’s ongoing visit to New York includes a number of meetings as part of preparations for COP17. The discussions focus on the organizational process, expected programs, and opportunities for cooperation.

In a press release, the ministry said that Matevosyan met with European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience, and a Competitive Circular Economy, Jessika Roswall.

Minister Matevosyan and Commissioner Roswall discussed “the importance of coordinating conferences, drawing on the experience of previous COPs and the synergies created through the involvement of various international organizations,” the ministry said in the statement.

“The Minister emphasized the necessity of applying appropriate approaches and effective methodologies in order to achieve targeted and tangible results.”

The officials also discussed the organizational aspects of COP17 to ensure an effective and well-coordinated process. “The importance of maintaining continuous contact with stakeholders and conducting joint awareness campaigns was also highlighted, as this will significantly contribute to enhancing public engagement and awareness.”

The 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) will take place in Armenia in 2026.
