No serviceman has been killed or injured in Armenia-Azerbaijan border shootings for one year and seven months, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated at the 7th congress of the ruling Civil Contract party.
Pashinyan stressed that the congress is taking place under fundamentally different conditions.
“The Republic of Armenia has entered a completely new stage in its history, peace has been established between Armenia and Azerbaijan. That peace was achieved on August 8 in Washington, in the presence and with the support of U.S. President Donald Trump, with the declaration adopted by me and the President of Azerbaijan,” the Prime Minister said.
He noted that since independence, Armenia has never had such a long period without casualties from border shootings. "August 8 is the culmination of a long process. For one year and seven months, no soldier has been killed or injured in the Armenia-Azerbaijan border shooting. This is peace,” Pashinyan emphasized.
The Prime Minister added that the goal is to extend this period indefinitely: “We must ensure that one year and seven months becomes two years and seven months, three years and seven months, 100 years and seven months, 200 years and seven months, and so on, and applies to all borders of the Republic of Armenia.”
He also recalled his remarks before the 6th party congress, when he stated that if the government managed to ensure the existence of the state for two to three years, it would be able to guarantee its existence for centuries.
“Three years after that statement, I am standing before you as the Prime Minister of Armenia in a situation where no soldier has been killed or injured in border shooting for one year and seven months, and with the Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Inter-State Relations already initialed,” Pashinyan concluded, congratulating the people of Armenia.
