Portugal’s Rúben Dias said on Friday in Yerevan that the Armenian national football team can be a ‘dangerous’ opponent.

Dias made the remarks at a pre-match press conference.

The Armenia vs. Portugal first leg UEFA Group F European qualifier for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place in Yerevan on September 6.

“We’ve had a few opportunities to study the Armenian national football team. The Armenian team can be a dangerous opponent. They have good quality players,” the Portugal defender said.

Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martínez said he has ‘great respect’ for the Armenian team.

“We have great respect for the Armenian team. I’ve seen what the Armenia head coach has achieved in the club where he used to work. For us it is a big challenge to play here and we have great expectations from this qualifying round,” he said.

“It is going to be difficult in the first match because the first matches are always difficult after winning the nations league.”
