Investigator petitions court to detain Archbishop Ajapahyan

The Investigative Committee has petitioned the court to remand Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan, Primate of the Shirak Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, in pre-trial detention, lawyer Ara Zohrabyan has announced.

According to Zohrabyan, Archbishop Ajapahyan has been charged with making public calls via mass media and information technologies, allegedly aimed at usurping power and overthrowing the constitutional order.

“The court and the hearing date will be announced later,” Zohrabyan noted.

Archbishop Ajapahyan denies the charges brought against him.
