Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan has described the session of the Armenia-Russia Commission for Interparliamentary Cooperation held in Yerevan as an important step towards strengthening dialogue between the two nations.

“Today’s session is yet another important step in the direction of strengthening dialogue between the two countries and peoples,” Simonyan said during the session attended by Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Valentina Matviyenko.

“The interparliamentary commission has proven itself as an effective platform for open and productive dialogue between the legislative and executive bodies,” he said.

The Speaker said the meeting would contribute to the deepening of the traditional friendship and cooperation.

Since the session is convened on the 80th anniversary of the victory in WWII, the Speaker said, “The victory in the Great Patriotic War [WWII] was a result of not only military courage, but the spiritual strength of millions of people. Now more than ever it is important not only to withstand by all means the attempts to distort and falsify the history of the Great Victory, but also to preserve the historic truth.”

Matviyenko, in her remarks, said Russia attaches great importance to “interparliamentary cooperation with brotherly Armenia.”

She said the interparliamentary platform is effective and contributes to the development of cooperation between the two nations.

Speaking about the 80th anniversary of the victory in WWII, the Russian top senator said it was the common victory of all peoples in the USSR.

Matviyenko honored Soviet Armenia’s contribution to the victory, noting that around 600,000 Armenians fought on the frontlines against Nazi forces.

“More than 100 sons of the Armenian nation were honored with the title of Hero of USSR, while around 30 became knights of the Order of Glory. The name of USSR Marshal Ivan Baghramyan was forever written in history. With funds collected by the Armenian people and the Armenian Church, military equipment was created, including air force squadrons and tank columns, and aid was provided to children of frontline soldiers,” she said.

Matviyenko underscored the importance of Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan's and Soviet Armenian veterans’ presence at the Moscow Victory Day parade.
