Speaker of Parliament of Armenia Alen Simonyan on June 6 received the delegation led by Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Valentina Matviyenko.
Simonyan held a one-on-one meeting with Matviyenko before holding enlarged-format talks.
Simonyan thanked Matviyenko for the visit, noting that such mutual visits are important in terms of developing bilateral relations, especially given the fact the trip is taking place in the context of the 80th anniversary of the victory in WWII, the parliament’s press service said in a readout.
The sides discussed various issues pertaining to the bilateral agenda, such as political, economic, educational and cultural, emphasizing in particular the development of interparliamentary cooperation.
Regional developments were also discussed.
Simonyan reiterated Armenia’s stance in establishing lasting peace in the region, emphasizing that Armenia is waiting for the Azerbaijani side in order for the finalized peace treaty to be signed.
Matviyenko said Russia is in favor of peace and stability in the region.
Speaker Simonyan drew his counterpart’s attention to the issue of the unlawfully held Armenian POWs and other detainees in Azerbaijan, as well as the issue of the missing persons.
Simonyan and Matviyenko then participated in the opening ceremony of the 39th session of the Armenia-Russia Interparliamentary Commission for Cooperation.
The top legislators then viewed an exhibition titled Road To Sanahin: The Story of An Orphanage at the parliament building. The materials of the exhibition have been provided by the Saint Petersburg Culture Committee and the Museum of the Leningrad Defense and Siege.
