Armenian, Japanese Vice Speakers hold meeting

Vice Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Hakob Arshakyan, during his visit to Japan, met with Koichiro Gemba, Vice Speaker of the House of Representatives of the country’s parliament.

The legislators discussed the Armenian-Japanese interparliamentary cooperation agenda, highlighting the deepening of political dialogue and mutual support in international arenas, the parliament’s press service said in a readout.

The parties also discussed prospects of regional stability, security and development. 

Vice Speaker Arshakyan presented Armenia’s position regarding the establishment of peace in the South Caucasus region. He underscored that Armenia remains fully committed to the peace agenda, and the talks around the peace treaty with Azerbaijan have been finalized.

He said that the Armenian Prime Minister has numerously reiterated readiness to sign the peace agreement, but Azerbaijan’s continuous artificial preconditions have been creating obstacles for advancing the process.

Arshakyan also said that Armenia is engaged in constructive dialogue with Turkiye, having introduced the Crossroads of Peace initiative aimed at deepening regional cooperation, strengthening Asia-Europe ties, as well as ensuring peoples’ prosperity and sustainable development.

The Vice Speaker of the Armenian parliament described the issue of POWs and other detainees as a purely humanitarian matter, underscoring that all POWs and unlawfully held persons must be urgently repatriated in accordance with international law and humanitarian norms.

Speaking about domestic developments in Armenia, Arshakyan said that the Armenian government has been advancing democratic reforms ever since the 2018 Velvet Revolution.

Koichiro Gemba reiterated Japan’s support for the peace process, stressing the importance of international law, as well as Armenia’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
