Law enforcement agencies focus on revealing major drug trafficking networks, says top prosecutor

The Armenian law enforcement system’s focus this year is on combating drug trafficking, Prosecutor-General Anna Vardapetyan told lawmakers.
She said that the law enforcement agencies are focused on revealing major drug traffickers and local laboratories producing narcotics.
Vardapetyan said last year they identified a problem where minor drug trafficking cases were mostly being uncovered while the network of major trafficking remained “in the shadow.”
“It seems the law enforcement system was chasing low-volume drug [trafficking cases] and there was a gap in the part of [combating] major drug smuggling,” she said.
Vardapetyan said law enforcement agencies cooperated in 2024, namely the criminal police and national security service, and implemented major work in revealing such cases.
“Huge work has been done to reveal major drug smuggling, local major laboratories and production sites,” Vardapetyan said, adding that the work will continue.
Next year the analysis of the work will show the extent to which the actions contributed to reduction of crime among juveniles and adults.
