Spanish FM grateful to Armenian authorities for rescue efforts of Spanish mountaineers injured in avalanche

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Álvarez is closely monitoring the efforts to rescue a group of Spanish mountaineers injured in an avalanche in Armenia.

In a post on X, the foreign minister expressed his gratitude to the Armenian authorities, particularly Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, for their cooperation.

Álvarez mentioned that the consular emergency unit has been mobilized to provide all possible assistance to Spanish citizens.

Earlier, the Armenian Ministry of Internal Affairs’ rescue service reported that, according to preliminary data, eight mountaineers (citizens of Spain) who were trapped under an avalanche on Mount Aragats on March 11 were airlifted by helicopter to the village of Aragats. They were then hospitalized with injuries of varying severity. One individual remains missing, and search and rescue operations are ongoing.

The expedition group of nine was trapped under the avalanche on the northern peak of Mount Aragats; eight members managed to escape, while one person remains missing.

At 15:26 on March 11, the Crisis Management Center of the Aragatsotn Regional Rescue Department received an alert about the incident.

 Rescue teams from the Ministry of Internal Affairs were immediately dispatched to the scene.
