The EU-funded Technical Assistance for the Development of the Geographical Indication “Armenian Brandy" was launched on February 27 in Yerevan.

This project seeks to strengthen the Armenian brandy industry by introducing a distinctive Geographical Indication (GI) system. The initiative will delineate specific production zones, approved grape varieties, and traditional production methods, ensuring consistent quality through rigorous controls and advanced laboratory infrastructure standards.

The EU-funded project is implemented by Expertise France jointly with DMI Associates in accordance with the obligations stemming from the Armenia-EU Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

The launch ceremony brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, experts, winemakers and international partners, who discussed the project goals and expected results.

The project will develop a unique brand identity supported by a strategic marketing plan to position Armenian brandy competitively in domestic and international markets. By providing legal protection and training for producers, the project aims to preserve authenticity, empower local stakeholders, and contribute to economic growth while safeguarding Armenia’s cultural heritage.

The budget of the project is 2 million 845 thousand euros.

Deputy Minister of Economy Lilia Sirakanyan said, “Armenian brandy isn’t simply a product for Armenia, it is a symbol of our historic-cultural heritage, craftsmanship and economic power.”

Underscoring the worldwide recognition of Armenian brandy, she said that brandy production has significant share in the country’s agriculture and exports, ensuring thousands of jobs.

“In order to preserve and develop Armenia’s competitive position in the global market we must ensure the promotion and protection of Armenian brandy within the framework of an internationally recognized geographical indication system,” she said.

Thanks to the project the Armenian side will develop a legal, technical and institutional framework to ensure the Armenian brandy’s compliance with highest international standards.

Armenia thus proves that it is committed to transparent, high-quality and internationally recognized production standards.

Sirakanyan said the GI program isn’t simply a technical process but a strategic decision what will shape the future of the highly valued production sector.
