The Armenian parliament is debating the bill on EU accession.

The bill was initiated by several civic organizations through a petition which garnered enough votes to be considered as a bill. It calls on the Armenian authorities to launch the process of EU integration. The bill was previously endorsed by the Cabinet.

The bill says “The Republic of Armenia, expressing the will of the people of the Republic of Armenia, pursuing to make the Republic of Armenia a safe, secure, developed and prosperous country, is announcing the launch of a process of Armenia’s accession to the European Union.”

The purpose of the bill is to enshrine the will and determination of Armenia’s people and its current authorities regarding the accession to the advanced, civilized and developed mankind’s family, Artak Zeynalyan, one of the initiators of the petition, told lawmakers Tuesday.

The adoption of the bill, among others, will contribute to regional peace and stability through restoring balance of powers, increase the country’s opportunities to ensure national security, align the Armenian military to modern EU standards and further develop human rights protection. It will also contribute to creating mechanisms for economic security by eliminating monopolies, diversifying the economy, increasing the output and quality of goods and services, which is only possible through cooperating with the West and the EU.

The bill will make democracy, the citizens’ right to participate in public administration and its practical implementation, as well as the rule of law, irreversible, Zeynalyan said.
