YEREVAN, DECEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS. The Cabinet has passed a decision on suspending the powers of Gyumri city council. Early elections will be held in the city.
The decision on calling early elections will take effect after February 20, 2025.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, speaking at the Cabinet meeting, recalled how the administration crisis unfolded in the city: all members of one of the factions in city council tendered their resignation, followed by resignations of the mayor and his deputies. “And there’s no other way out of this situation than early elections. But even if theoretically there is another way, it is unacceptable because we believe that Gyumri residents must have the chance to elect their city council and mayor,” Pashinyan said.
He said the primaries were successful.
The legislative initiative paves the way for appointing an interim mayor. Pashinyan said he will make the appointment tomorrow, based on the results of the primaries.
