Spanish legislator commends Pashinyan’s ‘pragmatic’ peace treaty offer to Azerbaijan

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 7, ARMENPRESS. Armenia’s offer to Azerbaijan on signing the agreed-upon articles of the peace treaty is a clear and strong message that Yerevan is serious about establishing peace, Member of the Congress of Deputies of Spain Jon Iñarritu has said.

“The Armenian Prime Minister’s proposal at the UN General Assembly reflects a strategy rooted in peace and commitment,” the Spanish legislator told Armenpress.

In his UN General Assembly speech, PM Nikol Pashinyan reiterated his offer made to Azerbaijan to sign the agreed-upon articles of the peace treaty and leave the outstanding parts for further discussions.

“From my perspective, this approach emphasizes Armenia's status as a democratic state, seeking to resolve conflicts peacefully and diplomatically. By suggesting that both countries sign the parts of the draft peace treaty that have already been agreed upon, Armenia demonstrates a clear interest in moving forward with negotiations and building a peaceful future for the region and the international community,” Iñarritu said.

The Spanish lawmaker said the Armenian side’s proposal “aims to avoid prolonging tensions and ensures that the progress made so far isn't undermined by disagreements on remaining issues or continued provocations from Azerbaijan.”

“The Armenian stance also reflects confidence in the power of ongoing dialogue to address more complex issues, steering away from violent confrontation. It aligns with diplomatic values, where conflicts are resolved through discussion, not force. In the broader context of international politics, this pragmatic move sends a strong message that Armenia is serious about achieving peace. It could also shift the responsibility onto Azerbaijan to demonstrate its commitment to peace and may encourage greater involvement from the international community to support the process,” Iñarritu added.
