If Aliyev actually wants peace, the ball is in their court – Speaker of Parliament

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 1, ARMENPRESS. Armenia is offering the international community to speak to Azerbaijan regarding the necessity to sign a peace agreement with Armenia under the articles that have been agreed upon so far, Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan told reporters.

Amid the ongoing peace talks, Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed most of the terms of the would-be peace treaty. Armenia has offered Azerbaijan to sign the agreed upon articles and then continue discussions regarding the outstanding issues. Azerbaijan has not agreed to this so far.

“In case of political will there is no problem in terms of signing the agreement under the agreed upon points today,” Simonyan said.

Simonyan reminded that his Azeri counterpart had offered to sign the treaty based on the five principles, and Armenia said it is ready.

“Now there are at least thirteen agreed upon principles. And we are once again proposing, calling on the international community to speak about this with the Azerbaijani colleagues. If Azerbaijan actually doesn’t have territorial aspirations, if the Azerbaijani leader truly wants peace in the region, then the ball is long in Azerbaijan’s court. We are waiting for the official Baku’s response,” the Speaker of Parliament said.

He said various international partners have already been offering platforms for signing the peace treaty.

“I would like the Azerbaijani side to hear us more and understand more. Perhaps they have fears due to the past, the history. The Armenian side is ready and is trying to understand, understands many things said by the Azerbaijani side. This is already a matter of professionalism and will,” Simonyan said, adding that the main obstacle now is Azerbaijan’s absence of will.
