EUMA presence up to Armenia and EU, lawmaker rebukes Azerbaijani officials

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 4, ARMENPRESS. The presence of the European Union’s monitoring mission (EUMA) in Armenia is a matter between Yerevan and Brussels, an Armenian lawmaker has said when asked to comment on Azerbaijan’s latest statement about EUMA.

The Azeri officials earlier claimed that the recently signed regulation on joint activities of commissions between Armenia and Azerbaijan is the basis for EUMA to leave Armenia.

“The presence of the EU’s monitoring mission is a matter of discussion between Armenia and the EU. The EU monitors are stationed in the territory of the Republic of Armenia and are carrying out monitoring in the Armenian side of the border, thus, it is up to Armenia and the EU to decide when, for how long, and with what personnel the EU monitors should be present there,” Khandanyan said.

He said that there could be no need for monitoring if a peace treaty is signed, the delimitation process is completed and there is regional peace.

The EUMA withdrawal is not under discussion now, he said.
