YEREVAN, JUNE 3, ARMENPRESS. Ruling party candidate Claudia Sheinbaum won Mexico's presidential election, according to the INE electoral institute's rapid sample count released Sunday night, Reuters reports.
The electoral institute's so-called rapid count estimates the result of the election based on a sample that is representative of the vote across the country. It has a margin of error of +/-1.5%, INE says.
Sheinbaum will be the first woman to lead the country's government. She is the candidate for the ruling leftist Morena party under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The two leading presidential candidates of these elections were women: Claudia Sheinbaum andXochitl Gálvez, from the conservative PAN party, who is representing a coalition of opposition parties.
According to CNN, Sunday’s election was the largest in the country’s history. Over 98 million voters were registered to cast a ballot in Mexico and more than 20,000 positions are set to be filled.
Violencehas loomed large in this election, the bloodiest in Mexico’s history. Dozens of political candidates and applicants have been killed by criminal organizationstrying to influencethose coming into power.
