At meeting with ICRC President, Armenian FM emphasizes necessity of strongly condemning Azerbaijani war crimes

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 22, ARMENPRESS. Foreign Minister of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan met on September 21 with President of the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer in New York on the sidelines of the 77th UN General Assembly, the ministry said in a news release.

Presenting the consequences of the latest aggression of Azerbaijan against Armenia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the Foreign Minister said that Azerbaijan’s criminal acts were accompanied by cases of deliberate targeting of civilian population and infrastructure and gross violations of international and humanitarian law.

The FM specifically emphasized the necessity of strongly condemning the cases of ill treatment against the Armenian servicemen and prisoners of war, including the tortures against servicewomen and other military crimes. In this context it was stated that not condemning in an addressed way and leaving unpunished the Azerbaijani war crimes and militaristic rhetoric by the international community make the aggressor side more reckless, by opening a path for new crimes.

The Armenian FM highly valued the activity of ICRC aimed at responding to the issues relating to the return of Armenian POWs and hostages held in Azerbaijan, the search operations for missing persons and other humanitarian matters.
