U.S. to provide financial assistance for reforms in Armenia's judicial system

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 13, ARMENPRESS. The United States will provide USD 2.2 million to Armenia for the implementation of a row of programs in the judicial sphere. On September 13 the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the United States to the Republic of Armenia John Heffern and the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia Aghvan Hovsepyan singed the 15th amendment to the Letter of Agreement on Narcotics Control and Law Enforcement between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of Armenia. As reports "Armenpress" the assistance provided through the new agreement will benefit the Armenian people by continuing to help the Government of Armenia more effectively fight transnational crimes such as human trafficking, the illicit international drug trade, and money laundering. It will also enhance Armenia's rule of law by augmenting law enforcement capacities and support overall judicial and legislative reform.

Among other things the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the United States to the Republic of Armenia John Heffern laid a heavy emphasis on the importance of bilateral cooperation in the judicial and legal sphere. In addition Ambassador Heffern underscored: "We have managed to record a progress in the struggle against transnational crimes and trafficking and implement significant reforms in the judicial and legal system."
