Ongoing wildfires in Spain and Portugal

YEREVAN, JULY 23, ARMENPRESS: Firefighters in Spain's Girona region near the border with France are battling to control several forest fires which have killed three people, reports Armenpress citing Euronews.

Strong winds have hindered efforts so far in an area which is home to one of the country's most popular beach destinations.

One man and his 15-year-old daughter were killed after jumping off a cliff to avoid the flames while a third person died of a heart attack.

Portugal is also suffering. On the island of Madeira scorching summer temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius have triggered wildfires forcing villagers to evacuate their homes.

On the mainland in Algarve, more than 1,000 firefighters are trying to contain a blaze which is ravaging the country's main cork producing region.

Portugal has had relatively few forest fires in the past two years due to low temperatures and high rainfall, but this summer it’s different.
