Magdalena Grono says it is important to give new impetus to Nagorno Karabakh negotiation
process

YEREVAN, MARCH 29, ARMENPRESS. Giving a new impetus to the negotiation process of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement is very important, Magdalena Grono, International Crisis Group Program Director, Europe & Central Asia, told reporters on March 29, Armenpress reports.

“Today the situation escalation risks in the conflict zone are high. We see that currently the process is such that the hopes for progress have been eliminated. There are no platforms for fundamental discussion. On the other hand, it will be important to try again to give impetus to the process. We hear that another meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan is possible, the meeting between the Presidents of two states is being prepared. In these discussions it is necessary to create grounds to ensure the further progress”, Magdalena Grono said.

She said at this stage the processes are deepened, the April events had an impact on the societies of both sides. According to Grono, nationalist, patriotic approaches are realized in both sides which are gradually strengthened.

“We see that the lack of trust leads to a situation when the sides are thinking about who must take the first step. We deal with lack of trust-related issues. I think after April, wave changes took place in both sides at the same time, the militarization in Azerbaijan is widely discussed. In other words, both sides seek to toughen the situation in a sense that the army must be equipped with the necessary arms. There were changes also in the approaches of the defense ministers. Yes, there is a peace discourse in Armenia, but to say that it is totally absent in Azerbaijan will not be correct. In any case, at this stage it is very difficult to discuss any mutual concession, the problem is more difficult in case of Azerbaijan, it is difficult to raise the self-determination issue there, to discuss the issue of Karabakh not being as part of Azerbaijan. We believe we deal with rooted stances from both sides”, Magdalena Grono said.
