MP believes Constitutional reforms will reinforce democracy

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 19, ARMENPRESS. The public will say “yes” to Constitutional reforms as the reform package predicts reinforcement of democratic freedoms. RPA parliamentary faction member Levon Martirosyan told the journalists about this on October 19.

“The new Constitution is better compared to the existing Constitution also for increasing the role of political parties, especially opposition ones, which are granted with unprecedented rights and authorizations, particularly in regard of influencing various elections at the National Assembly. Numerous Constitutional laws and key posts cannot be adopted or elected without the consent of opposition”, “Armenpress” reports, Martirosyan mentioned.

Another participant of the press conference, member of “Heritage” party faction Tevan Poghosyan stated that the content of Constitutional reforms document is a model of a democratic state.

“How that model will or will not work will show the future, but I am convinced in one thing, we will really feel the changes during the second electoral phase, but we must make changes starting from today so as to reach a level of a democratic state”, Poghosyan added.

The President of the Republic of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, issued a decree on holding the referendum on Constitutional reforms on December 6, 2015. The parliament has approved the decision to put the draft Constitutional reforms to a referendum.
