Duplicate of destroyed Jugha khachkar erected in Tsovinar village

YEREVAN, AUGUST 22, ARMENPRESS. The members of “Young land defender” have education and sports trainings in the forest of Tsovinar village of Gegharkunik province. Armenpress reports that on August 22 at the camp the young people apart from education-sports training also participated in the opening ceremony of khachkar (Armenian cross-stone). Khachkar erected at camp is a duplicate of one of Jugha destroyed khachkars.

10 khachkars of that sort have been erected in Artsakh. The opening ceremonies of the latter will take place in the coming week. Armenpress reports that Lieutenant Varduhi Maronyan, head of “Young land defender” noted that over 5 thousand land defenders participated in the gatherings, which started June 1.

“Pedagogues, doctors, specialists of various fields participate in the education and sports training gatherings. The latter conduct courses for the children.”, said Varduhi Maronyan. The last case of Middle century Armenian khachkar destruction organized by the Government of Azerbaijan was in the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic in 2005-2006 when the Armenian cemetery of Jugha town was destroyed. The khachkars were destroyed by means of heavy equipment and the cemetery area was turned into a firing field. More than 27 thousand khachkars and other Armenian monuments have been destroyed since 1998.
