Armenia to exercise full border control on its side in case of unblocking, says Secretary of
Security Council

YEREVAN, JUNE 5, ARMENPRESS. Armenian authorities will be in charge of border control on their territory in case of unblocking, the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan has said, adding that this has become clear for all partners involved in the regional connections’ unblocking process.

“There’s one important thing in terms of unblocking. I think it has become clear for all partners involved that border control will be fully carried out by the Armenian side. Armenia’s position in this issue is very clear,” Grigoryan told Public Television in an interview.

Grigoryan noted three main principles in the unblocking process – the sovereignty and jurisdiction over roads passing through Armenia’s territory and reciprocity – i.e., Armenia should also receive the opportunity of movement through Azerbaijani territory.

The Secretary of the Security Council said that unblocking can take place as part of these principles. “You know that Armenia was being pressured for a long time to find a solution outside of these principles. Now it has become clearer that Armenia will not take that step,” Grigoryan said, adding that one of the goals pursued by Azerbaijan during its attack on Armenia in September 2022 was to apply military pressure to achieve a change of stance by Armenia in the unblocking issue. However, Armenia is resolute in this matter, Grigoryan said.
