Yerevan renames street in honor of Maria Jacobsen, Danish missionary who saved
Armenian children during genocide

YEREVAN, JANUARY 27, ARMENPRESS. The City of Yerevan named a street after Maria Jacobsen, the Danish missionary who saved thousands of Armenian orphans during the Armenian Genocide.

The 51 Street in Arabkir district was officially renamed Maria Jacobsen street.

Vice Mayor of Yerevan Tigran Avinyan said in his remarks at the ceremony that having unnamed streets is a luxury when the Armenian nation has devotees and friends in its history, one of whom is Maria Jacobsen.

“We value the people who stood by the Armenian people during the most difficult moments. Maria Jacobsen is one of the people who saved and educated thousands of Armenian children during the years of the genocide, and I think this is a small opportunity of commemoration that our city can and must give to Maria Jacobsen. We must remember and record such people in the pages of our history, so that our children and grandchildren know them,” Avinyan said.

The new Ambassador of Denmark to Armenia Anne Toft Sørensen said that this is the first event she is participating in as Ambassador to Armenia.

Descendants of Maria Jacobsen were among the participants of the event.
