Armenian law enforcement agencies investigating reports on Crimea Bridge bomb smuggling

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 12, ARMENPRESS. The General Prosecution of Armenia released a statement regarding the Russian authorities’ reports claiming that the explosive device which was detonated on the Crimea Bridge had been transported through Armenia, in addition to other countries.

“The General Prosecution of the Republic of Armenia studied the information released by the Russian Federal Security Service on October 12 and the multiple media reports. Taking into account that the report contains information on an apparent crime, the General Prosecution forwarded the reports to the NSS Department of Investigations with a task to determine the initiation of criminal proceedings.

The General Prosecution will be coherent in fully revealing the circumstances of the report through the use of instruments prescribed by law, including international mutual support. Additional information will be provided on the result,” the General Prosecution said in a statement.

Russia has identified 12 individuals as suspected accomplices in the plot and has arrested eight of them, the Russian FSB said. The list of people in custody includes five Russians and three foreigners, who have citizenship of Ukraine and Armenia, RT reported.

The FSB claimed that the deadly cargo came from the Ukrainian city of Odessa. The explosives were disguised as rolls with plastic construction film, which were shipped on pallets and weighed 22,770 kg, the statement said.

Investigators said the shipment left Odessa in August and went through Ruse, Bulgaria, to Poti in Georgia. It was then moved to Armenia, which has a free trade agreement and a relaxed customs regime with Russia. It was then imported into Russia via Georgia on October 4, according to the timeline.
