‘We are grateful to US leadership for giving addressed assessments to Azerbaijan’s war
operations’ - Parliament Speaker

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 18, ARMENPRESS. In a statement for the press, following his meeting with the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi in Yerevan on September 18, the Speaker of Parliament of Armenia Alen Simonyan expressed gratitude to the United States for the fragile ceasefire agreement reached at the mediation of the US on September 14. He thanked the US leadership, especially a number of Congressmen for their addressed assessments of the latest  hostilities of Azerbaijan.

“Our meeting with Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mrs. Pelosi ended a while ago. We have discussed regional issues and the broad range of the bilateral mutual cooperation.

The visit of Mrs. Pelosi to Armenia at this very difficult period is important for us, whose support we have always felt in the most difficult and sensitive issues for us. During the meeting we have talked about the military aggression launched by Azerbaijan against the sovereign territory of Armenia on September 13. I have informed that the Azerbaijani armed forces have brutally bombarded not only the border positions, but also numerous settlements and civilian infrastructure of Armenia, as a result of which we have numerous human losses.

It’s clear that the military-political leadership of Azerbaijan takes advantage of the fact that the attention of the international community is focused on Ukraine.

We are grateful to the United States, at the mediation of which a fragile ceasefire agreement was reached on September 14. We also want to thank the US leadership, particularly, many Congressmen for giving addressed assessments to the war operations of Azerbaijan.

During the meeting I also presented Armenia’s consistent progress registered in the strengthening of democratic institutions and rule of law after the Velvet Revolution of 2018, as well as the future actions. We touched upon the development of the Armenian-American inter-parliamentary relations and discussed the prospects of expanding the cooperation in this direction. In this context I highly valued the activity of the Congressional Armenian Caucus and its key role in strengthening the bilateral ties.

The US Congress has constantly proved that it is a reliable partner and an important platform where numerous issues relating to Armenia, Artsakh and the Armenian people can be discussed in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and real friendship.

We have also discussed issues relating to regional affairs and the bilateral cooperation.

We both emphasized the necessity of constantly expanding the joint agenda aimed at democratic values”.
