UN chief Guterres appreciates Armenia’s efforts on hosting refugees

YEREVAN, MARCH 18, ARMENPRESS. Armenia’s Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian on March 17 had a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterresin New York, press service of the MFA told “Armenpress”.

“This is our first meeting since You assumed the post of the UN Secretary-General, and by using this chance, I want again to congratulate you on your appointment in this high and responsible post and wish success in Your important mission”, FM Nalbandian said.

He conveyed the Secretary-General the greetings and wishes of Armenia’s President and on behalf of the President invited António Guterresto visit Armenia.

In his turn, the UN Secretary-General thanked for the wishes and the invitation, assuring that he intends to establish productive cooperation with Armenia.

“During 25 years of its membership Armenia is actively taking part in the works carried out within the UN, it cooperates with numerous UN structures and circles, makes initiatives that deserve high appreciation”, António Guterressaid.

The Armenian FM asserted that Armenia will continue its constructive and active participation aimed at implementing the UN goals.

Edward Nalbandian presented to the UN chief Armenia’s initiatives aimed at preventing the genocides and the crimes against humanity.

During the meeting the sides discussed a number of urgent international and regional issues, including the situation in the Middle East, refugees, migration flows. In this context, the UN chief appreciated Armenia’s efforts on hosting refugees, stating that it can serve as an example.

FM Nalbandian presented the current situation over the Karabakh conflict settlement. There was also a talk on the agreements reached at Vienna and St. Petersburg summits. The UN Secretary-General expressed support to the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairing countries aimed at solving the conflict with exclusively peaceful means.

Within the framework of his visit in New York, Armenia’s FM also had a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman during which they discussed issues related to Armenia’s involvement on the sidelines of the UN.
