“Only side interested in unsettling status quo is Azerbaijan” – MEP Frank Engel

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 29, ARMENPRESS. The only side which can have an interest in unsettling the status quo is Azerbaijan, Frank Engel, member of the European Parliament from Luxembourg told ARMENPRESS. “It is sad that the Minsk group continues to appeal to "both sides" to refrain from aggression and blame - it should be abundantly clear to every observer that the only side which can have an interest in unsettling the status quo is Azerbaijan”, he said.

According to Frank Engel, the December 29 Azerbaijani incursion attempt on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border shows Azerbaijan’s determination to instill a feeling of insecurity and fear of attacks on the Armenian populations.

“It [Azerbaijan] wants to elicit disproportionate military reprisals from the Armenian side. Only in such a case would Azerbaijan be able to justify major military moves against Armenian forces”, Engel said.

Azerbaijani forces attempted a sabotage infiltration in the Armenian state border south-east of Chinari village, Tavush province in the morning of December 29. Three Armenian soldiers were killed during the Azerbaijani incursion.
